Y. Pelekanos (CYPRUS)

Yiannis Pelekanos was born in Assia in 1937. He has been painting from an early age. He couldn't study though as his dreams was and he ended up becoming a builder. He painted for his own pleasure.

He started painting Cypriot scenes in 1958. In 1974, he already had his first private exhibition ready, but had to leave twenty four of his paintings behind and take the road to displacement and become a refugee.

He was inspired by the Cyprio;t rural life. His work is based on personal experiences and own thoughts. His subjects portray the hard work of the Cypriot villagers. With his work, he takes us back in time and tries to give us a picture of his own past in his beloved village.
He says characteristically about his work. Some people write in words and make literature, some write in verses and make poetry, others in notes and make music. I paint and present the history of my country, its culture and its natural beauties. Women's domestic chores like baking. Farmer's chores out in the fields. Scenes of Cypriot religious life, marriages and festivities.

His aim is to maintain a way of life that is slowly being diminished. His art is characterized by pure colour, instinct and feeling of movement.

Natve art is the most authentic, frank and impulsive. The natve painter has a natural talent. He doesn't need to go to art schools and colleges.

Yiannis Pelekanos has done 12 private exhibitions and took part in many group exhibitions.

Pieces of his work are in the president's private collection, in Larnaca's municipal hall, in embassies and in many private collections in Cyprus, Great Britain, United States and Greece.

The present one is his thirteenth private exhibition. It is from the past to the present day, with scenes from Cypriot life, like weddings, Cristmas and Easter festivities, the sowing of seeds, the harvest, droughts, church icons and sculptures. From the freedom movements of the 1940's to the present day.
