HENRY DE TOULOUSE LAUTREC (1864 – 1901)

A French painter, printmaker, and illustrator, who depicted the decadent and frenzied nightlife of late 19th century Paris. He was closely associated with Bohemian Montmartre, its cabarets and performers, especially of the Moulin Rouge.

Born into an aristocratic family in Albi, France, due to a genetic disorder, he reached adulthood with a height of only 1.42m, which profoundly influenced his life and art. He often portrayed dropouts, prostitutes, dancers, and circus performers.

His work is characterized by vivid colours, expressive brushstrokes, and emphasis on the essence of his subjects. He became a master in lithography, which made his work accessible to a brader audience.

Some of his most well known paintings and posters include, “At the Moulin Rouge”, “Jane Aril”, and “The Laundress”. His Bohemian lifestyle, entailed excessive drinking and partying, shortening his life to 36, due to complications related to alcoholism and syphilis.

Toulouse-Lautrec influenced many subsequent artists, with his innovative style and subject matter. His works are much revered by collectors, and are exhibited in museums around the world. He is now regarded as one of the most important exponents of Post-impressionism and the Belle Epoque in Paris.
