RAPHAEL (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) 1483 – 1520
A celebrated painter and architect of the High Italian Renaissance. Outstanding among his many masterpieces, are “The School of Athens”, “The Transfiguration”, and “The Sistine Madonna”. Notable characteristics in his art are the skillful use of light and colour, his graceful figures, and his harmonious and well thought out compositions.
Raphael’s artistic talent and hard work, earned him respect and recognition early in his career, and Pope Julius II appointed him as the chief architect of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. During his brief life, he produced many important works, influenced by eminent artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Raphael’s contribution to the art world had a profound and lasting impact, and his legacy inspired and influenced artists for many generations.
